In early March the German demolition association, Deutscher Abbruchverband, held its 23rd demolition conference at the Maritim Hotel in Berlin. This is the largest demolition event in Europe and is still growing every year. Mikael Karlsson reports.

Since my election as president of the European Demolition Association in June 2016, we have seen the UK vote to leave the European Union, the summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, North Korea conduct its biggest nuclear test, and the election of Donald Trump to the White House. The world that we live in is sometimes difficult to understand.

The European Demolition Association, EDA, organized its Annual Convention 2016, which was held on June 9th – 11th, in Glasgow, Scotland (UK). Contractors, manufacturers and associations of demolition industry in Europe met with the aim of protecting its interests around the continent. The EDA 2016 Annual Convention included conferences, presentations about new developments, case stories and round tables discussion.

The German Demolition Association’s 22nd Demolition Conference will take place on 4 and 5 March 2016 in the Hotel InterContinental, Berlin. More than 750 visitors and 90 exhibitors took part in Europe’s largest demolition convention in March 2015. The convention is open to anyone interested in demolition.

Time for action The European Demolition Association, EDA, was founded in 1978 and has being around for quite some time. The key focus for the organization for many years was to help the industry develop in each country, through its National Associations.

What is demolition? How would you define the industry? If these two questions are asked of demolition contractors or suppliers to the industry, the answers might be surprisingly different, according to the specialty of each company. But if asked outside the industry, the answers will be much simpler. They will usually be something about the breaking part.

The demolition industry is, as is the case with most specialized activities, unknown to the general public. In our case, the fact that we brake, knock down and blow things up could make the activity a bit more odd and interesting. But our work has for many years been far more than just breaking structures part.
