Deep core drilling for explosive ordnance detection

The new construction of the OB-Karl-Lehr Bridge in Duisburg is a mega project that is being carried out while traffic is still running. As part of this project, Max Bögl was commissioned to carry out various dismantling work, choosing Tyrolit as an experienced partner for the necessary deep core drilling for the explosive ordnance detection in the existing material.

The OB-Karl-Lehr Bridge in Duisburg is one of the most important transportation routes for Duisburg, the port of Duisburg and the city’s logistics traffic. The original bridges date back to the second world war and are now being replaced by new bridges. What is special about this project is that the new bridges are already in place and traffic is already being routed over them. However, their position is not final yet as they will be moved to the position of the old bridges. For this purpose, the final piers and abutments, which are founded on bored piles, still have to be built at the old location. In order to carry out explosive ordnance detection, parts of the existing structure were therefore core drilled in advance with special deep core drill bits supplied by Tyrolit.

In order to adapt these piers to the new conditions, several preceding dismantling works were necessary. Among others, the company Max Bögl was commissioned for this. Its tasks included various core drillings in the abrasive concrete of the existing piers and abutment. Exploratory drilling with diameters of up to 252mm and depths of 4.5m to 4.9m had to be carried out to detect explosive ordnance. As the concrete dated from the war years and therefore contained a lot of abrasive sand, Max Bögl chose Tyrolit screw drill bits for these bores, which were ideally suited to the task.

With a lifetime of five drilled meters, the necessary bores were completed within a week with these special drill bits, with Xaver Mederer from Max Bögl being highly satisfied: “The Tyrolit screw drill bits were the right choice for this job. We were also able to rely on the know-how of an experienced application engineer from Tyrolit, which helped us a lot in this task. We would definitely work with them again.”
