Demolition dynamics: new year challenges and opportunities
Published 4/3 at 10:18As 2024 begins to take its course, it presents us with a great opportunity to reflect on the current state of the demolition, decontamination, and recycling industries (DDR), as well as to analyse the past and think about the future.
Last year was characterised by many changes; some of them positive, others, not so much. In particular, we could all feel the impact of the complex geopolitical situation, both in Europe and worldwide, as it has determined the development of the industry.
However, many great changes took place as well, especially with regards to training, safety, and technological advancements. We are already seeing robotics and automation play a significant role which will continue in the years ahead. Thus, there are definitely things that all professionals involved in the industry need to keep in mind as an interesting opportunity for growth.
Sustainability and environmental consciousness are also taking a front stage and affect the way in which we interact with the public and each other. As the European Commission’s 2030 climate targets draw closer, more initiatives and regulations begin to apply to the construction sector. This constitutes a challenge to the industry, and it’s a one we need to approach with caution. The companies involved in DDR, including demolition contractors, need time and resources to adjust to the situation. This highlights the need for collaboration and exchange of knowledge and ideas between the industry professionals and, in particular, public institutions.
Face to face events also appear to have returned for good, leaving online meetings as a thing of the past. In 2023, many successful events organised by both EDA and its members took place. From the NDA annual convention in Phoenix to the EDA annual convention in Amsterdam, and the World Demolition summit in Toronto, we can feel the excitement emanating from industry professionals to jump back into action.
So, what can we expect in the months to come? The forecasts vary greatly by any given country, although most appear to point to slight growth during the year. We discussed some of these things in the European Demolition Industry Report 2023, published by the EDA back in June; and much of the forecasts made in it seem to be coming true so far.
For now, moving forward, maintaining our standards, and striving to improve are our main priorities. While those tasks are, in no way, easy ones, as they require innovation, patience and effort, the industry has shown that it is more than capable of adapting and overcoming any challenges the world has thrown at us.
On behalf of the EDA and myself, we wish you a great start of the year, and we are looking forward to working together with you for the betterment of the DDR industries and its people.
