HD Hyundai Construction Equipment introduces two heavy crawler excavator models

Hyundai introduced at Hillhead in June this year its largest Stage V crawler excavators with the arrival of the 80t HX800A L and the 100t HX1000A L. These heavy duty machines have been designed to operate in a mines and quarries, as well in bulk earthmoving for construction and infrastructure project applications. They are designed to deliver maximum productivity with reduced total cost of ownership.

Both new excavators are powered by the latest EU Stage V compliant Perkins diesel engines. The HX800A L uses the six cylinder Perkins 2506J, providing 400kW at 1,800rpm and 2,468Nm of torque at 1,400rpm. The larger HX1000A L is powered by the Perkins 2806J, offering 460kW at 2,000rpm and 2,952Nm at 1,300rpm. The engines are equipped with a combined exhaust treatment system, incorporating a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. They also utilise an asymmetric twin scroll turbocharger which has two different sized scrolls to stream exhaust gases across the turbine wheel at varying velocities, for rapid response and maximum output.

An electronic hydraulic power control system has been designed to minimise fuel consumption while increasing digging efficiency. It utilises nine sensors across the machine to calculate the required flow and pump output. The HX800A L has two variable displacement tandem axial piston pumps, each delivering 504l/m of flow, while the larger HX1000A L has three pumps producing 523l/m each. A closed centre main control valve ensures that there is minimal hydraulic flow in the standby position, reducing fuel use. In both machines, the pumps have a cross sensing system to reduce fuel use and to ensure that dig end hydraulics operate independently.

The excavators have four operating modes and four power modes, working in combination with variable speed control and pump torque control, allowing the operator to select specific engine and hydraulic system outputs to suit the task at hand. They come with a boom priority mode and a swing priority mode that increase breakout power or slewing speed to suit the operation. Boom regeneration and dipper arm regeneration allow hydraulic oil to flow through the main control valve as the boom is lowered, reducing fuel consumption, and increasing speed of operation. The bucket cylinder is supplied by two spools in the control valve, for faster operation and reduced resistance, within the system. The engine radiators and the oil coolers have hydraulically driven cooling fans that can be reversed to blow out dust and debris when needed.

The excavators sit on a durable, heavy duty track frame with large rollers, come with a full track guard option and a heavy duty sprocket. Sturdy under guards are standard, and the machines have a robust crossed roller swing bearing for a long service life in arduous conditions. Customers can also specify optional bucket and boom cylinder guards. The HX800A L is suitable for 4.25-5.24m3 buckets and the larger 100t machine will be able to work with 5.4-6.8m3 buckets. The two machines are offered with a choice of short mass excavation and longer monobooms, and with the option of two dipper arm lengths. To ease assembly on site, the counterweight is mounted horizontally, with a hydraulically removable counterweight available as an option.

The HX800A L and HX1000A L have, what the manufacturer says, is a state of the art operator cab that offers level two FOPS protection when equipped with a FOPS guard. The cab is suspended on vibration damping mounts to absorb more shocks than a simple block system. The operator has a heated seat with air suspension and the two machines come with HD Hyundai’s ‘All Around View Monitoring’ (AVM) camera system, providing the operator with a 360° view around the working area.

A  touchscreen monitor with rotary controller provides easy access to control menus within the screen, including power settings, mode operation and auxiliary hydraulic settings. The system also connects to Bluetooth to allow control of smartphones and other devices. The excavators are equipped with low effort joystick controls providing fingertip operation and precise control over all functions. Proportional thumb switches can be mounted horizontally or vertically to suit the operator’s preference.

Wide catwalks are fitted to both sides of the machines, providing easy access to service doors. Automatic greasing is available and the machines are equipped with an electric fuel pump for ease of refilling. A centralised service point provides easy access to the water separator, fuel filter and main oil filters, while the machines have a heavy duty two stage air filter to provide maximum protection for the engine. “These heavyweight excavators will build on HD Hyundai’s presence at the heavier end of the market across Europe, providing a highly productive digging and loading solution for mines, quarries, bulk earthmoving contractors and heavy civil engineering sites,” said product manager Gert Peeters.
