The turbulent times notwithstanding, PDi Magazine continues to deliver breaking news from the demolition and recycling industry. Here Andrei Bushmarin presents a roundup of the latest innovations in the scrap shear sector.

Trevi Benne attachments for a subsea project

This year, Italy based Trevi Benne was faced with a new and exciting challenge to develop shears for a subsea project. Following a feasibility study and bench tests, the company manufactured five new attachments - three 10t ‘CS’ 100RS shears and two CS 160RS models weighing in at 16t. The CS 160RS were to be used underwater at a depth of 800m, while the CS 100RS shears were intended for cutting pipes on a pedestal above the surface. There were two types of pipes to be disposed of: flexible pipes and a double submerged rigid tube with a diameter of 460mm, which would be cut into 21m sections. Shears that operate in marine environment need a special treatment technique, which is much more complex than conventional manufacturing processes. Coming without a rotation unit, the attachments feature a chromed stem, stainless steel fittings, purpose made seals, handles and rings.

BPH promotes LaBounty solutions in UK and Ireland

UK based attachment specialist BPH is now a LaBounty dealer in England and Ireland. With 360o rotation, the LaBounty products offer easy operation and precise handling on the most complicated projects. The fully enclosed patented reversible piercing blades reduce wear to the parent material, as well as minimising welding and maintenance. Additionally, the speed valve is designed to shorten cycle times by 30% leading to an increase in productivity. The forged cylinder rods and a dual guide slide puck system keep the jaw aligned and reduces jamming to maximise performance, longevity and safety. Patented LaBounty reversed, large bore, forged cylinder rods and seal design are designed to give longer seal life and allow higher operation pressure. Thanks to its extensive facilities, BPH is able to refurbish and service the existing LaBounty users’ equipment in an efficient manner.

‘Cayman’ shears from ZATO

The Italian manufacturer ZATO has been making shears and rail breakers since 1990. The company’s flagship scrap shear series, which is called Cayman, ranges from a nimble 650kg model to an impressive 9,500kg one. The range boasts a powerful cylinder featuring a regenerative valve designed to enhance and optimise its performance. Rotation is ensured by a top tier gear motor with an anti-cavitation valve complemented by pressure limit valves to safeguard the motor. To further prioritise customer satisfaction, the Italian manufacturer stocks Cayman attachments along with spare parts for prompt shipment.

Demarec expands ‘DXS’ range

The DXS-40 (3,200kg) and DXS-50 (4,500kg) scrap shears, equipped with the ‘DemaPower 2.0’ technology, from Netherlands based Demarec, are the frontrunners of the company’s ‘DXS’ line. According to the manufacturer, the shears offer an increase of up to 25% in performance when compared to the previous DXS models. The DXS range has been recently further expanded with the addition of the two new shears: the DXS-80 weighing in at 8.1t and the 9.1t DXS-90. Thanks to the DemaPower 2.0 cylinder technology with four pressure chambers and a double acting speed valve, the DXS scrap shears are designed to have the performance equivalent to that of a shear twice the size. At the moment, the range comprises of six models, fitting 18t-100t excavators. Another two shears - the DXS-30 and DXS-40 – will soon be added to the product portfolio.

Another eagle hatches in Mantovanibenne’s nest

The SH320R ‘Eagle 3’ model from Italy based Mantovanibenne is a powerhouse of a shear that is designed to deliver clean and precise cuts. According to the manufacturer, the combination of the shear and a wheeled excavator allows users to achieve high levels of productivity. Operating with more efficient (+30% cutting force) and shorter equipment reduces consumption and material waste, allowing the use of lighter excavators without compromising performance. By accelerating the recycling process, a quicker return on investment can be achieved, actively contributing to environmental sustainability.
